Common in Denmark and the south of Sweden. Less common in mid Sweden becoming rarer further north. Scarce in southern Norway.

The mast (nuts) are slightly toxic when raw, but loose their toxicity when cooked (roasted).

Beech nut oil was much more popular in the past, and is relatively simple to extract.

Beech trees only produce a crop every 3 to 4 years.
